WARD’S Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome Lab Activity |
Combined Investigation and Poster Helps Students Understand Cutting-Edge Biotechnology Techniques Without Expensive Equipment |
Identifying all human genes, finding the location of each, and matching each gene to human traits and functions are the objectives of a team of international researchers working on a project to map and sequence the human genome. The project’s goal is to determine which diseases and disorders are related to genetic mutations and, in the future, establish treatments and cures. With our kit, students perform three activities utilizing colorful pop beads to re-create the process of DNA sequencing, as well as the function of restriction enzymes. In an additional activity, students use the included Human Genetic Disorders poster to locate the genes responsible for disorders on particular chromosomes. Any of the main lab activities can be completed in a 45-minute session. The activity includes enough materials for 12 setups, as well as a teacher’s guide and student copymaster.
