Maintain Both Haploid and Diploid Stages Yeast strains are ideal for genetic study because they are easy to grow and maintain, their life cycle is complete in approximately one week, and you can arrest different stages of the life cycle by growing it on different types of media. WARD’S offers a variety of strains that carry the traits for color (red, cream, or white) and tryptophan dependence or independence, expressed as either different color colonies or by their ability to grow on selective media. These various strains can be used for a wide range of genetic experiments, including reproduction experiments, since the “a” strain will mate with the “alpha” strain. All strains are haploid form. They are supplied on YEAD agar growth medium. Incubate at 30°C.
