WARD’S Genetic Diagnosis of Sickle Cell Anemia Lab Activity |
| Simulate a Medical Analysis of the Hemoglobin Gene |
People with sickle cell anemia have abnormal hemoglobin molecules, which differ from normal hemoglobin by a single amino acid — valine is substituted for glumatic acid in the beta chain of the hemoglobin. This lab activity, ideal for advanced high school and college classes, allows students to perform agarose gel electrophoresis with bacterial DNA samples and sequence the hemoglobin gene to identify which of the amino acids it codes for. The kit includes enough materials to run three gels. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
