Conduct Three Tests for Various Bacteria’s Enzyme Production |
Bacteria possess different enzymes for each chemical reaction that takes place; the presence of these enzymes can be used to identify the bacteria. The three tests included in this lab activity detect the presence of catalase, which allows the bacteria to grow in the presence of oxygen; hemolysin, which breaks down red blood cells; and the presence of lactose assimilation enzymes, necessary for the bacteria to use lactose as a source of carbon and energy. These tests can also be related to the fields of medicine and industry — the test for hemolysis is used to diagnose strep throat, and the lactose test checks the safety of drinking water. Freeze-dried cultures; lac (+) Escherichia coli, lac (-) E. coli, Streptococcus salivarius, and S. mutans. You will get instructions and enough materials to perform each test once.
