WARD’S Chemical Structure of Proteins Lab Activity |
| Illustrates Complex Structure of Serum Proteins |
Polypeptides, the subunits of proteins, have varying properties and sizes. Proteins can be separated with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) to identify them. This lab activity is perfect for clarifying the structure of proteins; students electrophorese bovine serum proteins and compare their components in the absence and presence of a reducing agent. They then compare their results to a molecular weight marker and a standard curve to determine the molecular weights of the unknown polypeptides. The kit comes with enough samples and reagents to run up to ten gels, a teacher’s guide, and student copymaster. A vertical PAGE chamber, power supply, 20 μL micropipets, and precast polyacrylamide 6–14% gradient SDS gels, all required, are available separately. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
