WARD’S Gene Interaction Lab Activity |
| Ideal for Investigating Trait Inheritance |
The genes handed down from parents to offspring can be identified and analyzed through the polypeptide banding patterns obtained with electrophoresis. Wheat, rye, and triticale are analyzed in this lab activity to determine whether one is a genetic hybrid product of the other two. Students use a standard molecular weight protein marker and construct a standard plot to determine the molecular weight of the unknown proteins found in the three samples, the results verifying that triticale is a genetic hybrid of wheat and rye. The activity comes with enough samples and reagents to run up to ten gels, a teacher’s guide, and student copymaster. A vertical PAGE chamber, power supply, 20 μL micropipets, and precast polyacrylamide 10–20% gradient SDS gels, all required, are available separately. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
