Eight Models in One Set Demonstrate Dramatic Viral Attack |
To easily show how viruses attack the body to create infections, use the exceptional set of eight models depicting a T2 phage virus destroying a bacterium. Students can pick up and examine the individual, translucent models, enlarged 100,000X, to see what happens inside the bacterium at each stage. Each model represents a different step in the process:• Model 1: The bacterium• Model 2: Phage using its spike to attach to the walls of the bacterium• Model 3: Enzymatic action of the phage’s spike dissolving the bacterium wall• Model 4: Phage’s DNA entering the bacterium’s cytoplasm and leaving its protein coat attached to the outer wall• Model 5: Phage’s DNA self-replicating• Model 6: Bacterium following the phage’s DNA “directions” to produce viral protein coats• Model 7: Viral DNA entering the protein coats• Model 8: Bacterium lysingThe set includes a key, printed and on CD-ROM, identifying 12 structures and providing a brief description of each model.
