Borate gels separate native (whole) protein molecules by weight and charge, 3–8% gels separate DNA and RNA fragments up to 5,000 base pairs long and native protein molecules with a molecular weight of 200–400 kilodaltons; 6–14% gels separate proteins with a molecular weight of 40–1,000 kilodaltons.
SDS gels separate denatured proteins by molecular weight. 6–14% gels separate proteins with a molecular weight of 40–1,000 kilodaltons; 10–20% gels separate proteins with a molecular weight of 10–200 kilodaltons.
