Create a Hybrid Plant by Fusing Protoplasts from Different Geranium Plants |
Protoplasts, the living part of a plant cell within the cell wall, are often used in many areas of botanical research, such as the study of cell wall regeneration, localization of biochemical processes in the cell, and investigations of the mechanics of virus infection. Hybrid crops are being developed by introducing gene sequences into protoplasts, which may lead to plants with increased resistance to diseases and pests, greater nutritional content, and enhanced photosynthetic capabilities. Students learn the basics of protoplast fusion by working with geranium plants to create hybrids; the two different colors of the plants make it easy to observe the hybridization.
