WARD’S Exploring the Four “L’s” of C.elegans Lab Activity |
Witness the Complete Life Cycle of a Living Model Organism |
C. elegans is a transparent, free-living nematode that inhabits soil. Because its biological processes are similar to those of other animals, including humans, it is often used as a model system. In this activity, students will study the four larval stages of C. elegans life cycle over three to five days. They will also observe the alternate stage known as the dauer, formed in the absence of food or at high population densities, and bring these worms back to a normal L3/L4 stage. Students will also be able to see pharyngeal pumping in C. elegans by using two different bacteria as a food source. The activity includes a teacher’s guide, student copymaster, a wild type culture of C. elegans (N2), tube cultures of E. coli OP50 and Serratia marcescens D1, and materials for eight setups. A compound microscope and stereomicroscope, required, are available separately. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
