Learn to determine the species of origin from a hair sample, differentiate between natural and synthetic fibers, and perform tests to identify the specific type of fiber with this engaging activity. Students will use their observational skills and a compound microscope (available separately) to examine the morphological characteristics of hair and fiber. The activity includes a human hair sample set, animal hair sample set, fiber sample set, as well as a teacher’s guide, student copymasters, and materials for 15 setups.
Materials Included •1 Box, Microscope Slides (72/box) •1 Box, coverslips •2 Butane gas lighters •2 Human hair sample sets (red, blonde, brown, gray, and dyed) •2 Fiber types sample sets (cotton, wool, nylon, polyester, acrylic, and rayon) •12 Forceps •1 Bottle, clear nail polish
Materials Needed But Not Provided •Compound Microscope •Additional fiber samples •Forcibly removed hairs •Naturally shed hairs •Fume hood or well-ventilated area •Aluminum foil (optional) •Permanent marker •Ocular and stage micrometer (optional) •Metric ruler (clear and thin optional)
Time Requirement •Two to Three 45 minute lab periods
