WARD’S Agriculture and the Environment LC50: How Much Is Too Much Nitrate? Lab Activity |
| Conduct a Bioassay Demonstrating the Toxic Effects of Ammonium Nitrate |
By studying how a common pollutant from farm fertilizer runoff acts on a population of Daphnia, students learn an important lesson about pollution often seen in agriculture. Exposing Daphnia to various concentrations of ammonium nitrate, students feed the Daphnia fluorescently-tagged sugar and observe that only healthy Daphnia will glow under long-wave UV light (available separately). Students then use pooled class data to determine which concentration is lethal to 50% of the Daphnia (LC50). Additional demonstrations use colored water to mimic serial dilutions as used in bioassay and show how ammonium nitrate enters groundwater and surface waters through runoff and seepage. Includes materials for 15 setups, a teacher’s guide, and student copymaster. A coupon for perishable materials is also included.
