CAST 2015 Workshop Schedule Led by the Ward's Science Plus Us team, these hands-on workshops are a favorite of CAST attendees, and space fills up quickly! Be sure to reserve your seat early for these workshops, where you'll learn hands-on skills and techniques for saving time in the classroom, meeting standards, and turning science lessons with engaging and innovative products and solutions for every science subject and grade level. ALL Workshops are Located in the Fort Worth Convention Center, Room #110 A/B |
Vampire Chronicles: Sink Your Teeth into Genetics and Blood Typing The talk of the town of Bedford is that there are vampires living amongst the townspeople. These vampires prefer to feast on individuals with rare blood types, and therefore frequent large town gatherings to find their perfect entree. You, a dedicated townsperson and member of the vampire eradication committee, will help investigate townspersons that may be at high risk of becoming a vampire's next meal using Ward's Simulated Blood. The challenge is to determine who will be safe and who could be dinner? Explore techniques for extending learning beyond the basics of blood typing using animal blood microscope slides and simulated blood testing techniques. Receive a free Ward's Simulated Blood as a gift for your hard work! Time: 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Presenter: Michelle Pagani Register Now

TEKS Aligned Activities Using Probeware: As Simple as 1,2,3! In three easy steps introduce students to the world of science and technology using Ward's Single Probes system. Incorporating technology, math and engineering principles into your TEKS aligned science activities. Time: 10:00-11:00 a.m. Presenter: Patty Muscatello Register Now

Eggs-Treme Racing Design and build a paper car to protect your "Humpty Dunpty" from harm. Apply knowledge of momentum and friction to construct a vehicle that maximizes performance while cradling an egg and keeping it in one piece. The winner of the race achieves the fastest speed without having to put "Humpty Dumpty" back together again. Time: 1:00-2:00 p.m. Presenter: Samantha Bonelli Register Now

Let Motion Show How Cars May Really Drive Themselves in the Future with the ERGOBOT! With the rapid acceleration of technology in our everyday lives, it is not a far reach to think that cars will someday drive themselves. We can easily therefore teach motion physics with robots in the classroom. Using concepts such as position, velocity, acceleration and vectors, we will explain how to use interactive simulations, and animated interactive equations in order to program a small robot vehicle to compete a closed speed course, and eventually navigate a maze. Time: 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Presenter: Jill Lewis Register Now

Ward's Forensic Science: Integrating Math & Science Using Blood Spatter Do the math and spill some blood while you explore the cutting-edge procedures and techniques of the forensic scientist by analyzing blood spatter. Investigate the evidence and see how to incorporate active interdisciplinary learning into your existing science program to motivate and meet the needs of all learners. Door prizes from Ward's, the leader in forensic science education! Time: 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Presenter: Raul Perez Register Now

Who's Killing Crystal Creek? Uncover the source of pollution affecting a local creek using our hands-on materials. Connect real-world environmental issues and science practices. After solving the case, head to the Ward's Science booth to track down the pollution offender and collect the bounty! Time: 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Presenter: Michelle Pagani Register Now

Dissect, Discover, and Diagram an Ecosystem Come dissect an Owl Pellet to discover what it has been eating, in order to determine its niche and ecosystem properties. Branch out of your usual routine and spread your wings at our fun and interactive dissection workshop. Discover fun and exciting ways to bring ecosystem studies to the classroom. Time: 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Presenter: Patty Muscatello Register Now

Earth Science STAAR Stations: Get Your Hands Dirty! Get your hands dirty and dig into our weathering, erosion/deposition, water cycle and earth from stations. Is your science program preparing students for success on the Grade 8th Grade STARR? Experience TEKS-based, STARR aligned station activities designed to develop conceptual understanding of these earth science topics. Great Door prizes from Ward's Science! Time: 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Presenter: Jill Lewis and Patty Muscatello Register Now

Chemistry of Wine Ever wonder what is in that bottle of wine, other than grapes? Sugar content, acid content, and alcohol content are all qualities that are important when making and picking your favorite wine. Scientific techniques such as refractometry, titration, and performing a density measurements using a hydrometer all can be used to determine how much alcohol, sugar and acid is present in various bottles of wine. Explore the scientific principles behind determining the perfect blend, and how this can be easily integrated into a high school classroom with our hands on Chemistry of Wine Workshop. Time: 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Presenter: Dr. Liz Hoffman Register Now
